When a young miner’s son perished on the Brecon Beacons in the summer of 1900, it shocked an entire community. On 4 August 1900, the Saturday before a Bank Holiday, a miner from Maerdy, at the head of the Rhondda Fach, decided to take his five-year-old son with him to visit the child’s grandparents who still farmed near Brecon. Father and son William and Tommy Jones arrived in the town by train at about six o’clock in the evening. From there they had to walk four miles to reach Cwm Llwch, the little farmhouse deep in the valley to the north of the Beacons owner by Williams parents.
