In South Carolina folklore, the Gray Man is a ghostly spirit allegedly seen walking up and down the coast in old-fashioned clothing. Most often seen on the small town of Pawleys Island, The Gray Man is known to warn residents – and even ship captains out at sea – when a storm or hurricane is on the way. Although there are many variations of the legend, most say that the Gray Man was first seen in 1822, with the last reported sighting occurring just before Hurricane Florence hit in 2018.
