Within the forests outside of Rhinelander, Wisconsin resides a fearsome beast described as having “the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end”.
In 1896, Eugene “Gene” Shepherd would search and capture one to display at the Oneida County Fair to the amazement of 1000s of spectators. This would lead to a love affair between the town of Rhinelander and the creature.
