What if the ‘Others’ are not really others but brothers (or at least cousins) who have been sharing this planet with us for Millenia?

Having realised that the planet suffers regular catastrophes they moved underground tens of thousands of years ago and left the surface dwellers to it, popping back up occasionally to see what’s happening and perhaps influence events.
