Before the advent of automated lighthouses, the men and women who tended these buildings lived in near total isolation for long periods of time. Weathering terrifying storms on some of the most inhospitable terrain, lighthouse keepers had the serious duty of keeping ships and their crews from sailing into dangerous waters. The isolation coupled with the heavy responsibility could, it seems, often lead some lighthouse keepers down their own very dark paths of madness, death, and, even sometimes, disappearance.
