The small city of Battle Creek Michigan (pop 52,347) sits where the Kalamazoo River and Battle Creek meet. The town took hold after a scuffle between some Native Americans and surveyors over food. Later a deal was reached and the NA left leaving settlers to take over the land. In the center of town just on the Northside of Kalamazoo is the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center. This building is what remains of the famous or infamous Battle Creek Sanitarium aka “The San”. This is the story of not only “The San” but also the many you ran it, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg.

Olalla is a small unincorporated town on the coast of Puget Sound. It was once a boomtown when the foresting industry showed up in Washington but like so many others the town dwindled in size as the forest did. Much like Battle creek a young doctor set up another Sanitarium, this place would go on to be called “Starvation Heights”.
