The Ghost that Sunk the Erie Board of Trade
The Erie Board of Trade was a schooner that made trips all across Lake Huron transporting goods like coal and wheat. The ship had a mundane history until it’s very last voyage. One fateful day the ship ran out of wind while returning to port. The captain feared his crew would grow lazy so set them all about doing busy work. Most of the tasks were inconsequential until he turned his attention to a newer crew member nicknamed “Scotty.” He ordered Scotty to use the boatswain chair to tend to the top masts. Scotty admitted he didn’t feel comfortable because the chair wasn’t in good shape. The crew agreed saying it was too dangerous. The captain didn’t heed their warnings and sent him up. Everyone’s fears proved to be true as the young man plummeted to his death. With his dying breath he cursed the captain and the ship. For three days is ghost haunted the crew until they returned to port. The captain set back out only to disappear. The Erie Board of Trade, the captain, and the new crew sunk into the great lake just as the ghost predicted.
