The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens, ended World War II, and initiated the nuclear arms race that continues to this day. Yet the world carried on. A decade later, how did both countries reckon with the ever-present fear of annihilation? How did they assign culpability? Could Americans really just return to a simple life of domestic bliss? Could Japan ever finish mourning the loss?
